Background of the study
Public health campaigns rely heavily on effective communication to ensure that health messages reach diverse populations. In Lagos, Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a crucial medium for disseminating public health information, owing to its widespread use among various demographic groups. Translators working on public health campaigns must navigate the complexities of rendering technical health information into accessible Nigerian Pidgin without losing accuracy or cultural nuance (Udo, 2023). This study appraises the translation practices employed in public health campaigns, examining how messages related to disease prevention, vaccination, and hygiene are adapted for Nigerian Pidgin audiences. The research explores various strategies, such as dynamic equivalence and adaptive translation, used to simplify technical content while retaining its essential meaning (Nwachukwu, 2024). Through content analysis of campaign materials, interviews with health communicators, and surveys of audience comprehension, the study evaluates the effectiveness of these translation practices. The goal is to determine best practices that can enhance public understanding and promote health literacy among Nigerian Pidgin speakers.
Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread use of Nigerian Pidgin in public health campaigns, translation practices often fall short in conveying complex health information accurately. Misinterpretations and oversimplifications in the translation process can lead to confusion and misinformation among target audiences (Udo, 2023). Additionally, inconsistent use of technical terminology and cultural references may undermine the credibility of health messages (Nwachukwu, 2024). These shortcomings hinder the overall effectiveness of public health interventions in Lagos. This study seeks to identify the challenges associated with translating public health messages into Nigerian Pidgin and to propose strategies that improve clarity, accuracy, and audience engagement.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates translation practices for public health campaigns in Nigerian Pidgin, ensuring that vital health messages are communicated effectively. The findings will benefit public health officials, translators, and policymakers by providing guidelines that improve message clarity and cultural relevance, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes in Lagos (Udo, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to translation practices in Nigerian Pidgin public health campaigns in Lagos. It does not extend to other languages or health communication mediums.
